The Washington Capitals are currently tied atop the East Division standings with the New York Islanders and are just two points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins. They just made a big move before the trade deadline.
Anthony Mantha Trade
The Capitals acquired Anthony Mantha, who has been an excellent player over the past two seasons,
from the Detroit Red Wings
He finished with a career-best 48 points in 67 games back in 2018-19, and he racked up 38 points in just 43 games last season. He’s not on quite the same pace this season — he has just 21 goals through his first 42 games — but a move to Washington should help. The Capitals rank second in the league in terms of goals per game, and there’s a chance he could play alongside Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov on the first line. Mantha is under contract through the 2023-34 season, and he’ll make an average of $5.7M per season.
In exchange for Mantha, the Red Wings will receive Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, a 2021 first-round pick, and a 2022 second-rounder. That’s a pretty decent haul. Vrana has been relegated to second- or third-line duties in Washington, but he has the talent to play on the top line in Detroit. He’s amassed 25 points in 39 games this season.
