Pittsburgh Pirates star Bryan Reynolds has been a rumored trade target of contending teams for a couple of years now. However, it was revealed earlier this offseason that Reynolds himself had now officially requested a trade.

The Pirates had always been openly against trading one of their best players, especially one with still three years of team control remaining. This caused the Pirates asking price for Reynolds to be astronomical, one no team was willing to entertain.

Despite the recent trade request from Reynolds stemmed from the Pirates' lack of ability to offer him a fair extension, the asking price for the 27-year-old outfielder is still way too high.

Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic notes in a recent article:

Yes, the Pirates are willing to entertain moving center fielder Bryan Reynolds, if only because clubs are almost always willing to listen to trade offers. Teams interested in Reynolds, however, say the price tag is similar to what it was in the past — exceedingly high. One rival official, in what surely was an exaggeration, said the Pirates want a “Soto-type package” for Reynolds. Another said Reynolds is “super expensive.” A third described him as “unlikely to move.”

The Pirates are clearly doing whaever they can to maximize the return on Reynolds. It seems highly unlikely that there will be a long-term extension between Reynolds and the team, but Pittsburgh isn't going to surrender its best trade asset for an unmemorable package.

Eventually this standoff will come to an end, but the how and when seems more up in the air than ever.
