The Cleveland Browns leaned on their defense to earn the win in Week 13 over the Houston Texans. In the midst of that battle, though, linebacker Sione Takitaki was forced to leave the field on a cart due to injury.
Now the Browns' fears have been confirmed by the latest update on the key defender.
Takitaki suffered a torn ACL on Sunday, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. This major injury will end his promising 2022 campaign short and likely force the soon-to-be free agent to miss time during the 2023 season as well.
This is just a devastating blow for both the team and player. Takitaki had emerged as an important presence at middle linebacker for Cleveland in 2022. His 71 tackles rank second on the team and already marked a career-high for the fourth-year pro. He also recorded a forced fumble and four tackles for loss across his 12 games played this season.
The injury could not have come at a worse time for the linebacker, who could've cashed in this offseason after his breakout 2022 season. He'll surely still have a market, but he'll likely be forced to take a less lucrative deal coming off of a significant ailment.
In the meantime, Cleveland will now need to figure out its replacement for Takitaki. Trade acquisition Deion Jones is one option to take his place, while second-year LB Tony Fields II could also be in the running following his big game in Week 13.
