The Browns fired defensive coordinator Joe Woods almost immediately following the end of the season. After a year that saw a talented unit under perform, the Browns worked swiftly to find a new coach to run their defense.
Browns Hire Jim Schwartz
After a slew of interviews that included Brian Flores, Jim Schwartz, Dennard Wilson, and Sean Desai, it was announced on Tuesday morning that Schwartz had won the job and would be the Browns' next defensive coordinator.
Schwartz has a long and accomplished history as a coordinator in the NFL. He's spent a total of 14 years as an NFL defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, on top of five years as the Detroit Lions' head coach from 2009-2013.
Schwartz has spent the last two seasons as a senior defensive assistant for the Titans, now he gets another shot at being a coordinator.
He gets handed a Browns defense with star power like Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward and promising young talent like Grant Delpit and Greg Newsome.
This team was the No. 20 ranked defense in the NFL in 2022, so Schwartz will have his work cut out for him. The Browns are currently around $9.8 million over the cap, so the team will have to get creative this offseason to find ways to improve the team outside of trades and the draft.
