Browns GM Talks Baker Mayfield Extension in Wake of Josh Allen's Record Contract

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have set the bar for 2018 draft picks looking to sign extensions with their teams before the end of their rookie deals. Now all eyes are on the Cleveland Browns and Baker Mayfield, who's in line for a hefty payday after a strong finish to the 2020 campaign.
Browns GM Andrew Berry revealed how Allen's deal affects the team's approach to a Mayfield extension.

Baker Mayfield Contract
In Berry's eyes, the Allen contract helps informs Cleveland of the going rate at the position. It's one of a few recent deals that will inform their approach to Mayfield, but he acknowledged that every situation is unique.
"But at the same time with any player that we’re considering extending we really deal with it on a case by case and individual level and really operate within the parameters that we think make sense for our organization and our team and that’s what we’ll continue to do across positions."
- Andrew Berry
Just because Allen got a deal with the most guaranteed money ever ($150 million), it doesn't exactly mean the Browns will be shelling out the same or even more. But the Allen contract certainly sets the market for young QBs looking to get paid.
The Browns had a season to remember in 2020, breaking an 18-year playoff drought thanks in part to Mayfield's play. He racked up 3,563 yards and 26 TDs while cutting his interceptions to a career low of 8. In fact, he threw 11 TDs to just 1 INT from Week 8 and on, demonstrating a possible leap for the former No. 1 overall pick.
Cleveland will surely look to lock Mayfield down long term in the coming months. A career year in 2021-22 could help the Browns fulfill their Super Bowl hopes. They have the eighth-best odds to win the championship this season at +1600, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
