Broncos Sign Veteran Cornerback In Response to Michael Ojemudia Injury

The Denver Broncos' secondary was dealt a blow on Thursday when the team placed third-year cornerback Michael Ojemudia on the injury reserve. The 24-year-old suffered a dislocated elbow during training camp and now must miss at least the first four games of the 2022 NFL season.

Although Ojemudia isn't Denver's best cornerback, he's still an important depth piece after racking up 73 tackles, eight broken-up passes and four forced fumbles in his first 18 career games. Fortunately, the Broncos have since gone out and signed a replacement CB to fill the defender's void.
Broncos Roster News
The Broncos announced on Thursday that they have signed veteran CB Darius Phillips as secondary depth. The former 2018 fifth-rounder spent his four-year rookie deal with the Cincinnati Bengals before signing with the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, only to be waived a few days ago.
As a result of Phillips' addition, CB Essang Bassey has been waived.

Phillips' versatility could land him a defined role in the Broncos' system. While he's recorded 73 tackles, 23 defended passes and five interceptions in 47 career games, he's made a name for himself on special teams as well. He's averaged 7.0 yards on 30 punt returns and 21.7 yards on 25 kick returns since 2018.
It remains to be seen just how long Ojemudia will be sidelined. Having said that, the Broncos are fortunate that a solid defender like Phillips was available this close to the upcoming NFL season.
