The Denver Broncos had a disappointing 2020 season, finishing at the bottom of the AFC West with a 5-11 record.

They come into this offseason with a ton of salary cap space available, however, so they can be expected to make some big additions.

The first major piece of free agency news for the Broncos isn't an addition, however. The team has officially announced that they are parting ways with Pro Bowl running back Phillip Lindsay.

Denver Broncos Phillip Lindsay

Lindsay and the Broncos parting ways means Denver loses one of their most productive players of the last three seasons. An undrafted free agent in 2018, Lindsay has rushed for 2,550 yards and 17 touchdowns on 534 carries, while adding 77 receptions and 465 yards as a receiver.

Injuries and the addition of Melvin Gordon caused Lindsay to lose his grip on the RB1 job in 2020, however.

Even with ample cap space, the Broncos just have too many needs on this roster to be able to justify paying up for two stud running backs.

It's safe to say the underdog Lindsay will remain a fan favorite in Denver no matter where he signs, and the announcement from the Broncos was a very classy way for the team to handle Lindsay's departure.
