Brewers' Opening Day Starter Officially Announced

After failing to qualify for the 2022 MLB postseason, the Milwaukee Brewers aim for better results in 2023. That quest begins on Opening Day — Thursday, March 30 — with a home matchup against the rival Chicago Cubs.

Naturally, Brewers fans have been wondering which pitcher will face the Cubs next week. The answer to that question was revealed Friday as the MLB announced all 30 Opening Day starters.

Brewers Opening Day Starter 2023

Unsurprisingly, Corbin Burnes will be the first pitcher to take to the Brewers' mound in the 2023 MLB season. This marks the second consecutive campaign that's seen the former CY Young winner named as Milwaukee's Opening Day starter.

Although he didn't earn any hardware last season, Burnes was still the Brewers' top arm. He finished with a 12-8 record through an MLB-high 33 starts, pitching to a 2.94 ERA and 0.965 WHIP with an NL-leading 243 total strikeouts.

Burnes also pitched well against the Cubs last season. Though he didn't get the decision in two of the three encounters, he still tallied a 2.37 ERA while striking out 24 batters over 19 innings.

The Cubs are countering Burnes with Marcus Stroman as their own Day 1 starter.

Even if Burnes and co. secure an Opening Day victory, the Brewers still have a lot to prove going forward. They currently sit at +3500 odds to win the 2023 World Series, putting them in a tie for No. 14 on FanDuel Sportsbook.
