When looking at the 2021 version of the Milwaukee Brewers, it's easy to pick Kolten Wong as the best hitter currently in the lineup. Wong has been on a tear against opposing pitching this season while slashing .291/.346/.485 with 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and 15 doubles.

Unfortunately for Milwaukee, the Brewers had a scary moment in Thursday night's victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wong has been dealing with some calf tightness down the last stretch during the month of June. He actually missed four straight games before giving it a go on Thursday.

The two-time Gold Glove winner then exited in just the third inning because of the same injury. Manager Craig Counsell's postgame update wasn't very promising, either.

Counsell explained that Wong may, in fact, end up seeing a short stint on the injured list. "We’ll wait and see [Friday]," Counsell said. "I think we have to consider it at this point, with him reaggravating it, and with the all-star break kind of giving us some extra days."

That's certainly not the update fans of the first-place Brewers were hopeful for. No concrete decisions have been made on Wong's potential IL stint, but in some regards Counsell's update is optimistic. Even if his 30-year-old second baseman does end up on the IL, the MLB calendar has a natural break coming up with the All-Star week.

It could be the exact amount of time that Wong needs to fully recover. After all, the 162-game campaign is much more of a marathon than a sprint.

The Brewers sit 6.5 games up in the NL Central division thanks to their 49-33 overall record. Milwaukee also owns the eighth-best odds (+1500) to win the World Series, according to the latest MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
