The Buffalo Bills opened up training camp with a punter battle between veteran Matt Haack and rookie standout Matt Araiza. Some camp competitions are unpredictable, but not this one. Bills Mafia had a good idea of who their starting punter would be a long time ago and the team confirmed that theory on Monday.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports the Bills have released Haack, leaving Araiza as the winner of the punter competition. The 22-year-old was nicknamed "Punt God" for a reason at San Diego State and he now has the opportunity to continue proving why he deserves that moniker at the NFL level.

Again, it wasn't too shocking that Araiza beat out Haack for the No. 1 punter job. The 28-year-old veteran's presence resulted in the Bills averaging only 42.1 yards per punt in 2021 — second worst in the league. Meanwhile, the rookie averaged 51.2 yards on 79 punts in his final year as an Aztec.

After impressing coaches at practice, Araiza hasn't had any issues showing what he can do in preseason action. He instantly became a fan favorite thanks to a massive 82-yard punt against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1.

The Bills are already a tough team to beat due to their pulverizing offense and intimidating defense. If Araiza can consistently pin opponents down within their own 20-yard line, Buffalo will become that much more of a headache to play.

Needless to say, Araiza has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to succeed. He has the pedigree and talent to live up to those expectations, but time will tell if he can do it as a rookie.

Bills Super Bowl Odds

The Bills need Araiza to live up to the hype if they're going to win the first championship in franchise history. Things are looking promising for that to happen as FanDuel Sportsbook lists Buffalo as the odds-on Super Bowl LVII favorite at +600 odds.
