After winning the World Series, the Houston Astros have wasted no time improving their roster for another championship run in 2023. Houston signed former MVP Jose Abreu to take over at first base, but this team isn't done spending yet.
The Astros are currently engaged in a bidding war for another top free agent.
Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports the Houston Astros are one of three teams that have made a multiyear offer to catcher Willson Contreras. The Chicago Cubs are another, and there's a mystery third contender as well.
Interest in Contreras is heating up as more premier talent comes off the market. The three-time All-Star, along with trade candidate Sean Murphy, is at the top of the list for any team seeking an upgrade at catcher.
Contreras is coming off of another productive year in Chicago, recording 22 home runs and 55 RBIs while slashing .243/.349/.466. He'd provide Houston's lineup some serious oomph from a position where top hitters are hard to come by.
It remains to be seen if the Astros are able to lure Contreras away from a Cubs reunion. The presence of an unknown third team in the running adds even more intrigue to this situation.
