After a one-year experiment that didn't bring much success, the New England Patriots and Cam Newton are expected to part ways when he becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

The former MVP has plenty of possible landing spots, but ESPN's Adam Schefter has a surprising pick for his most likely future team.

Two things stand out here. First, the Washington Football Team is a strange fit for Newton. Second, that $40-50 million price tag is crazy.

Washington didn't pursue Newton last offseason despite clearly not being sold on Dwayne Haskins as their long-term starter. And despite making the playoffs this year, they're also a young team that doesn't need to make a risky "win-now" move like dumping $20 million per year on a guy who hasn't thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in a season since 2018.

Of course, there is the Ron Rivera connection. Rivera coached Newton for his entire tenure as a Carolina Panther, and if anyone knows how to get the most out of Cam, it's going to be Riverboat Ron.

Getting $40-50 million over two years would also represent a massive pay raise for Cam, who got just $7.5 million in his one-year deal with the Patriots. Averaging even $20 million per season at the low end of that range would rank him 20th among all QBs in the NFL. Averaging $25 million would tie him for 14th.

Of course, Washington still has a playoff game to focus on, and there's plenty of time for plans to change or evolve when the offseason approaches.
