Game 1 of the 2022 World Series is fast approaching. The Fall Classic gets started on Friday, Oct. 28 with a first pitch scheduled for 8:03 p.m. ET. The matchup features to legitimate aces as Aaron Nola gets the ball for the Philadelphia Phillies and Justin Verlander for the Houston Astros.

During Thursday's pregame media sessions, Nola was asked about getting the Game 1 nod on the biggest of stages. He detailed a funny story about how manager Rob Thomson informed him of the prestigious honors.

Calling the story a case of "normal Rob Thomson," Nola said "he actually just told me right when we stormed the field after [Ranger Suarez] got that last out. We hugged each other and he told me then." A reference to Suarez finishing off the final two outs of Philadelphia's NLCS Game 5 victory.

It should come as no surprise, but Thomson clearly had his mind made up on Nola the second Philadelphia punched their World Series tickets. Nola is coming off a historic regular season and has continued to pitch well in the postseason, going 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA in three playoff starts.
