MLB rosters expand on September 1 and that gives rebuilding teams a chance to get a first look at some of their top prospects on a major league level. The Oakland Athletics are wasting no time calling up No. 3 prospect, left-handed pitcher Ken Waldichuk, to join the team on their next road trip.

Oakland Athletics News

Waldichuk was acquired as part of a deadline trade that sent pitchers Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino to the New York Yankees. The 24-year-old had been a steady riser in the Yankees' system thanks to his low walk rate and high strikeout rate. It's a trait that should help him face All-Star caliber hitters.

The former 2019 fifth-round pick started the 2022 season at the Double-A level, where he posted a 1.26 ERA and 41.1% strikeout rate across six starts (4-0 record). He was then promoted to Triple-A and continued to dominate by logging a 3.59 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 11 starts (47.2 innings).

Following the trade to Oakland, Waldichuk has had little trouble adjusting to his new team. His efforts across four starts with the Las Vegas Aviators have led to a 3.38 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Waldichuk has also struck out 21 batters during that span (18.2 innings) and posted a ridiculous 3.8% walk rate.

It's unknown whether the Athletics plan to slide Waldichuk into the starting rotation or start him out in the bullpen. No matter what, a corresponding move will need to be made for him to clear a 40-man roster spot. Athletics fans should keep their eye out for Waldichuk's debut sometime this weekend.
