It's time for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to officially consider former No. 1 pick Jameis Winston a bust.
He's been in the league too long to be considered as someone who has a high ceiling anymore. The potential that the Bucs thought they we getting when Winston came out of Florida State simply isn't there.
If we're looking for a good comparison, another first-round pick by the Buccaneers comes to mind -- Josh Freeman, out of Kansas State. Sure, Freeman was drafted 16 spots later than Winston, but they were both supposed to be the future of the Bucs' franchise.
But it turns out, that comparing Winston to Freeman would be somewhat of an insult -- to Freeman. Through 48 games (three full seasons), Freeman had 21 wins. Winston only has 19. And that's not even talking about the 70 turnovers (54 interceptions, 16 fumbles) Jameis has in those contests.
Freeman is widely considered a bust. He finished his five years with the Buccaneers with more than 13,500 yards, 81 touchdowns and 66 picks. Winston plays in a league that's much more quarterback-friendly and he still can't find a way to thrive.
You can't blame the team, the head coach, or the play calling at this point. It falls on the shoulders of Winston.
It's time for the Bucs to ride journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick for the remainder of the this season, and completely move on from Winston, whether it's by cutting him this year or in the offseason.
