If you're gauging seasonal transition from summer to fall by the weather, you're doing it all wrong.

As soon as you can bet on the NHL's odds to win the Stanley Cup, it's officially time to wave goodbye to the summer heat and get ready for some action on ice in the fall. And that has finally arrived.

What better way to usher in the new NHL season than opening with the Toronto Maple Leafs as the favorites to bring home the next Stanley Cup.

Despite finishing the 2017-18 season tied for the sixth-most points in the league with 106 total, the Maple Leafs have asserted themselves as early favorites ahead of both of last year's Stanley Cup teams between the Washington Capitals (+1100) and Las Vegas Golden Knights (+1100).

With the offseason acquisition of center John Tavares, combined with the steady development of rising star and 21-year-old center Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs have elevated themselves to the head of the pack chasing the 2018-19 Stanley Cup.

One interesting takeaway is that the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals were also the team Toronto tied with for total points from last season too. The Maple Leafs have also edged last year's President's Cup-winning Nashville Predators (+1000).

If Toronto lives up to these early-season expectations, it will be the first Stanley Cup the Maple Leaves have taken back to Toronto in more than 50 years.
