When the Eagles and Falcons line opened up this week at FanDuel, it read Eagles (-4). Now that gameday is here, the line reads Eagles (+1). That's an incredible five-point swing in just a couple of days. That type of swing is almost unheard of, apparently outside of this game (the season opener featuring the defending Super Bowl champ) every year.

Vegas oddsmaker and Director of Race and Sports for Boyd Gaming, Bob "Scooch" Scucci spoke with The Action Network this week and provided some insight on the reasoning behind the big shift that happens in this game every year.

According to Scooch, “Every year when the Super Bowl champs play this opening game, we always inflate this line a little bit, but usually, it actually goes even further. So, obviously, the public caught on. The wiseguys were always onto this.”

An interesting tidbit from an oddsmaker who is openly talking about preying on public bettors.

It makes sense. The public bets with a lot of emotion and always leans towards the favorites. When you couple that with the defending Super Bowl champs at home to open the season, it can create a toxic mix that results in a line shift of this proportion.

While it's too late to catch on to this trend for this season, its a valuable piece of info to know for betting season openers for years to come.
