It's no secret that head coach Kyle Shanahan is building something special in San Francisco. The 49ers have made an appearance in the NFC Championship game in two of the last three seasons. The team now heads into the offseason simply looking to polish off a roster full of talented players.
One way the 49ers can improve before Week 1 rolls around is through the free agent market. Addressing the cornerback position should be a top priority and a former divisional rival may be the perfect target. San Francisco should steal Darious Williams away from the Los Angeles Rams.
49ers Free Agency
Keep in mind the 49ers are set to lose a pair of veterans in Jason Verrett and K'Waun Williams to free agency, which makes them suddenly shallow in the secondary. That isn't good news, especially since San Francisco already gave up an opponent completion percentage of 67.4% in 2021 (No. 28 in NFL).
Signing Williams would be one way for the 49ers to fill in a gap without breaking the bank in the process. The 27-year-old knows what it takes to play in the NFC West and has broken up 23 passes over the last two seasons. Williams also posted a career-high 71 tackles (3 for loss) this past fall.
As it currently stands, San Francisco is projected to have just south of $3 million in available cap space. That number is likely to increase with a trade of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, though.
Williams' ability to shut down opposing receivers in the slot showcases how impactful he can be. It'll be interesting to see if the 49ers view the four-year pro in the same way. For now, San Francisco has the sixth-best odds to win Super Bowl 57 at +1300, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
