The San Francisco 49ers look to clinch a playoff berth with a victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18. It's now looking like they could have a morale boost following the latest injury update on starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Friday's practice marked the third straight day that Garoppolo participated, indicating that he might be close to returning from his thumb injury. You can see in the video below that he is making fairly accurate passes despite the reported pain levels of his current injury.
Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update
When it comes to a return timetable, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Garoppolo could play on Sunday if he's close to 100%.
Garoppolo's teammates even commented on his progress Thursday, with wideout Deebo Samuel saying that his QB "just looked like Jimmy to me." Meanwhile, tight end George Kittle remarked that Garoppolo didn't look that different from his healthy self, which is a great sign.
Garoppolo has had his highs and lows this season, completing 68.0% of his passes for 3,494 yards and 19 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. He's a perfect 5-0 against the Rams in his career, so it's pretty clear that he gives San Francisco their best chance for a playoff run.
If the 30-year-old veteran can't play on Sunday, the 49ers will have to turn to Trey Lance for the second straight week. The rookie QB was decent in Week 17, going for 16-for-23 on passing attempts for 249 yards, two TDs and an INT. Still, it remains to be seen if he can handle the pressure of a must-win game like the one that's coming up.
Regardless of who the starting quarterback is on Sunday, it's going to be an uphill battle for the 49ers. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently listing them as the 4-point road underdog against the Rams.
