Many NFL observers are watching to see how the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation eventually shakes out this season. The team has a ton invested in No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance, but incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the roster and could give the Niners the best chance to win right now.

Some early reviews of the QBs are in. And the results could shed some light on the pecking order heading into training camp.

49ers News: QB Depth Chart Clear at OTAs

So far, it sounds like Garoppolo is impressing with his early play. He has been a perfect 9-9 on passes during the two OTA sessions open to the media. Maybe more importantly, he reportedly looks "sharp" and "in command" while leading the 49ers in drills.

On the flip side, Lance has gone 8-13 on throws and is displaying a little less confidence by being "tentative." But for a rookie who's barely been part of the organization for more than a month and has a ways to go in building chemistry with his teammates, that's absolutely expected.

The bigger news would be if Lance was playing at or above Jimmy G's level in OTAs. A first-year player still clearly getting adjusted to the pace of the NFL is the norm.

However, if these early reviews hold up into training camp and preseason, then it appears Garoppolo will be the clear QB1 to start the 2021 campaign.
