Viable starting quarterbacks are never going out of style in the NFL. Just look at the Washington Commanders exchanging a pair of third-round draft picks for Carson Wentz.
But amidst plenty of quarterback shuffling this offseason, the San Francisco 49ers have never seemed to get especially close to moving Jimmy Garoppolo. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan seem content to play the waiting game, hoping that a training camp or preseason injury could make a potential trade partner desperate to overpay.
Jimmy G has other plans.
According to 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco, Garoppolo will ask to be released if a trade doesn't materialize.
Garoppolo is not a guy who tends to rock the boat, and it's easy to see his side here. He's being asked to potentially go through training camp with a team he knows is just waiting to get rid of him, at which point he would have no say over where he plays next season.
One interesting wrinkle is that the release probably wouldn't even be in his best interest financially. The 49ers owe him $24.2 million in base salary this season, which they wouldn't have to pay if he's released. Only 13 quarterbacks have a higher average annual salary than that, and it's hard to see Jimmy G being paid as a top-13 QB on the open market.
Garoppolo or no Garoppolo, the 49ers are still legitimate contenders in 2022, and FanDuel Sportsbook's Super Bowl odds have them tied for sixth in the NFL at +1600.
