The San Francisco 49ers had just about the worst luck you can have at quarterback last season. Starting quarterback Trey Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo went down in early December and third-string QB Brock Purdy got hurt in the NFC Championship Game. If one or all of them had stayed healthy, there's no telling how the 49ers' season would have turned out.

Now as we enter 2023, there are question marks surrounding who will start in Week 1 for San Francisco. Many presumed it would be Lance given his age (22) and upside as a former No. 3 overall pick, but 49ers GM John Lynch says that's not the case.

49ers Quarterback Situation

According to Lynch, Lance, Purdy and new signing Sam Darnold will all compete for that QB1 spot in training camp. He did acknowledge that Purdy is currently "the leader in the clubhouse" after going 7-1 as a starter last year and leading San Francisco to the NFC title game.

Purdy has had the most recent success, but Lance and Darnold are both former top draft picks, which should make the competition interesting. All are still relatively young as well, with Darnold the oldest of the bunch at 25.

Time will tell who ends up getting the start in Week 1, but it should make for an intriguing preseason to say the least.
