The San Francisco 49ers are busy preparing for their Divisional Round matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. However, the team has already suffered a loss this week, as director of player personnel Ran Carthon was stolen by the Tennessee Titans for their GM opening.
Though losing a key front office member hurts, the 49ers will be be compensated as a result.
San Francisco is set to receive a pair of third-round compensatory picks after Carthon's hiring in Tennessee. This is due to the NFL's incentive program that rewards any team with draft selections if a minority coach or executive is hired by another franchise for a head coach or GM role.
Carthon played nine combined games for the Indianapolis Colts during the 2005 and 2006 seasons before transitioning to an operations role. He was eventually hired by the Niners to be their director of pro personnel in 2017, and earned a promotion to overseeing player personnel before departing for Tennessee.
The 49ers have benefited from the NFL's development incentive program several times in recent years, seeing the likes of Mike McDaniel, Robert Saleh and Martin Mayhew hired by other teams for senior positions. San Francisco's No. 102 overall pick in this year's draft is a direct result of this.
