It has been proven time and time again that having quarterback depth in the NFL is a crucial part of roster construction. The 2021 season has already seen multi-week injuries suffered by starters Jimmy Garoppolo and Russell Wilson. However, one notable veteran QB remains a free agent.
Cam Newton has continued to express his interest in returning to the field and feels like he still has some juice left in him. With that in mind, here are three NFL teams that should sign the Pro Bowler.
Cam Newton Free Agency
1. Detroit Lions
It has not been working out well for quarterback Jared Goff in his first year with the Detroit Lions. Detroit is the only winless team left in the NFL this season (0-6) and cannot seem to close out games late in the fourth quarter. Head coach Dan Campbell reiterated during his press conference that he needs more than what he is currently getting from Goff. If that frustration continues to build up, don't be surprised if the Lions take a chance on Cam Newton. Newton accounted for 20 total touchdowns in 15 starts last year and also posted the second-highest completion percentage of his career (65.8%). Signing him could be one way for Detroit to mix it up a little.
2. Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks dropped a close game to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6 largely due to the struggles of quarterback Geno Smith. Smith threw for 209 yards and 1 touchdown, but was also sacked 5 times and lost a devastating fumble in overtime. Starter Russell Wilson is said to be weeks away from returning due to his finger injury, which leaves head coach Pete Carroll with limited options. Seattle is 2-4 and cannot risk getting too far away from the NFC West leading Arizona Cardinals (6-0). Adding Newton to the mix would allow time for Wilson to get healthy and give the team a much better shot at winning some ball games.
3. Houston Texans
It's hard to see a rebuilding team picking up a 32-year-old quarterback, but this simply comes down to how bad rookie Davis Mills has been. Mills has led the Texans to a 0-4 record in his four starts and has thrown just 5 touchdowns compared to 7 interceptions. Houston is averaging the fourth-fewest total yards per game (294.3) as well as the second-fewest points per game (15.3). It's obvious that this offense needs a spark and Newton could provide that. He is a dual-threat quarterback that knows what it takes to win games at the NFL level. Bringing in Newton would be a smart move to bridge the gap until starter Tyrod Taylor recovers from his hamstring injury.
