3 Surprising Teams That Could Miss Out on Bowl Games This Season

It's that time of year for some fanbases. The point of the season where the losses are piling up and a bowl game appearance seems like less of a certainty with each passing week.

With that in mind, here are three surprising teams that could find themselves left out of a bowl game this season.

1. Florida State Seminoles

If the Florida State Seminoles do miss a bowl game this year, fans will be quick to blame the team's rough start to the season. After losing to Boise State in their first game of the year, Florida State needed overtime to squeak past Louisiana-Monroe to avoid an 0-2 start. In the weeks since, FSU has racked up wins against subpar ACC teams, but the Seminoles have been unable to break through against more competitive opponents, like Virginia, Wake Forest and Clemson. At 4-4, Florida State will need a strong finish to qualify for a bowl, but its upcoming schedule doesn't do the Seminoles any favors. FSU has remaining games against the No. 6 Florida Gators, and ACC rivals in Boston College Eagles and Miami Hurricanes.

2. Miami Hurricanes

Speaking of Miami, the Hurricanes also find themselves in a precarious position heading into the last leg of the season. So far in the 2019 campaign, the Hurricanes have been a Jekyll-and-Hyde program. They played Florida close, ultimately losing by four, before being defeated by an unranked North Carolina team. Miami also has losses to Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, but managed to defeat a talented Virginia team, 17-9. The Hurricanes have a big game against the aforementioned Seminoles this week, and the loser could be on the outside looking in come bowl season.

3. South Carolina Gamecocks

The South Carolina Gamecocks have gone 3-5 to open the year, which makes their upset over then-No. 3 Georgia all the more shocking. South Carolina has dropped two straight since that 20-17 victory, with losses to Florida and Tennessee. Currently two games under .500, South Carolina doesn't have much room for error. With games against No. 4 Clemson and No. 20 Appalachian State still on the docket, the Gamecocks are in serious danger of missing a bowl game.
