The Philadelphia Eagles have salary cap issues heading into free agency. After trading Carson Wentz last month, Philadelphia now has to make other hard choices regarding its roster with the team $16 million over the recently set salary cap for the 2021 season.
Here are three Eagles players who could be the team's next cuts.
1. Alshon Jeffery
Alshon Jeffery had calf, hip and foot injuries in 2020 that limited him to just seven games. He also played in just 10 games in 2019. That doesn't cut it, and a separation between the two sides already is in the works. Philadelphia will save nearly $2 million in cap space by cutting Jeffery as a post-June 1 designation after he restructured his contract before the offseason.
2. Malik Jackson
Malik Jackson carries a $5.6 million cap hit, which leaves the 10-year veteran as a likely cap casualty after joining Philadelphia in 2019. He had a sub-par overall Pro Football Focus grade of 64.7 in 2020, making a divorce between the two sides easy.
3. Zach Ertz
Zach Ertz is a three-time Pro Bowler who seems headed out of the door, either through release or trade. The former second-round pick dealt with ankle injuries in 2020 that limited him to 11 games and a career-low 337 receiving yards. The Eagles get nearly $5 million in cap relief by cutting Ertz, and the business of football is going to prevent one of the game's top tight ends from finishing his career in Philadelphia.
