While there seem to be perennial candidates for the Cy Young award every year, there are also some that come out of nowhere. This year is no different. From front runners to top contenders, these are the three surprise Cy Young candidates so far this season.
3. Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers
If you said Ryu would be the frontrunner for the Cy Young before the season, many would have laughed at you. But after his performance this year, he deserves to be the favorite, at +130, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. In 15 starts, Ryu has a 9-1 record and a league-best 1.27 ERA. He's given up a total of 14 earned runs in 99 innings pitched while striking out 90 and walking just six. If he keeps that pace up, he'll run away with the award in the NL.
2. Jake Odorizzi, Twins
The Twins are having a surprise season in many areas, so it just makes sense to have a surprise pitcher in the AL Cy Young race as well. Odorizzi has a career-best 2.58 ERA so far and a 10-3 record in 15 starts. He has also given up just 61 hits in those 15 appearances. At +650, Odorizzi is tied for the fifth-best odds in the American League.
1. Mike Soroka, Braves
In just his second season, the 21-year-old Soroka has been terrific for the Braves. He has a 2.12 ERA and 8-1 record in 12 starts for Atlanta. This has earned him a spot in the Cy Young race, though he is certainly a longshot, at +2000 odds.
