Jarrett Allen continues to be one of the more promising young big men in the league right now. He had a career showing during the 2020-21 campaign despite a mid-season trade, averaging a double-double (12.8 points, 10.0 rebounds) on the year for the first time in his career.
Now the 23-year-old will enter restricted free agency, giving the Cleveland Cavaliers a chance to match any offer sheet he signs with another team. Here are three likely destinations for Allen this summer.
Jarrett Allen Free Agent Landing Spots
3. Cleveland Cavaliers
Let's start with the obvious. Cleveland jumped at the chance to trade for Allen from the Brooklyn Nets earlier this season, giving them a talented young big who's an RFA. The chance to retain Allen even if he signs another team's offer this summer had to be a motivation behind the deal. And, he just turned 23 in April, which puts him right on the same timeline as other Cavs core pieces like Collin Sexton (22) and Darius Garland (21). With that trio and promising rookie Isaac Okoro, Cleveland is only a few smart moves away from contending for a playoff spot in the East. It'd be smart for the Cavs to lock up Allen on a long-term deal as they continue to rebuild this roster.
2. San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs are at a crossroads even as they prepare for the Play-In Tournament in the West. Veterans DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay and Patty Mills are all unrestricted free agents this offseason, clearing the way for a possible youth movement in San Antonio. Signing Allen in free agency could kickstart their rebuild, giving this roster a talented and dependable big who still has room to grow. Allen posted career highs in points and rebounds this year while adding 1.4 blocks per game. The Spurs could have top-five cap space this summer, and stealing Allen to man the middle around rising guards in Dejounte Murray, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker IV is one smart way to spend their money.
1. Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors could be another team with a major veteran moving on. Kyle Lowry sticking with the team after the trade deadline doesn't mean he'll be re-upping with Toronto in free agency, and that could open up some money for the Raptors to throw at Allen. Having a strong center alongside Pascal Siakam was a clear issue that hurt Toronto during the 2020-21 campaign. An Allen-Siakam pairing would immediately set Toronto up to compete with the strong frontcourts of the East. He'd also form a strong young trio with OG Anunoby (23) and fellow RFA Gary Trent Jr. (22) that could lead the Raptors into the long term.
