The NFL offseason is full of all kinds of transactional moves that make an impact on the success of any given franchise. The Kansas City Chiefs are just one example as they recently restructured quarterback Patrick Mahomes' contract to free up some cap space.
By converting Mahomes' $21.7 million roster bonus to a signing bonus, the Chiefs save $17 million against the cap and now have the money to build around the young playmaker. With that in mind, here are three free agents the Chiefs should target with that cap space.
Chiefs Free Agent Targets
1. Corey Davis, WR
The Chiefs will likely lose Sammy Watkins to free agency this offseason and need someone reliable to line up alongside Tyreek Hill. Corey Davis fits that role perfectly as he is a physically tough football player that has a career average of 13.8 yards per reception. He is coming off his best season racking up 984 yards on 65 receptions and scoring 5 touchdowns in 2020. Simply put, he can pick up first downs when needed and also run deep routes down the field. The Chiefs should view Davis as another great offensive weapon for Mahomes to have as long as his asking price doesn't become too high.
2. Nick Easton
It is no secret that the Chiefs are having some depth issues along their offensive line right now. They recently released starters Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz due to their cap space hits next season and might search the free agency market for replacements. Signing Nick Easton would be a cheap way for the Chiefs to add experience to their line. He has played guard and center throughout his career and will enter next season at 29 years old. Plus, Easton will probably be open to signing a two or three year deal, which could work well with the cap space the Chiefs currently have available.
3. Ryan Kerrigan
Looking to the defensive side of the ball, Ryan Kerrigan could be a good player to target. He has been a consistent pass rusher in his career posting at least 8 sacks in seven of his 10 seasons played. In fact, he has only missed four games in his career due to injury. Kerrigan is 33 years old and will be looking to join a team ready to contend for a Super Bowl. That means he may sign for less money than expected. Lining him up opposite of Frank Clark would create nightmares for opposing offensive lines. This may be an underrated move, but the Chiefs should go out and make it.
