After an impressive showing in 2020, the Miami Dolphins had a slow start to the 2021 NFL season, going 1-7 in their first eight games. They ended up going 8-1 during the second half of the campaign, however, it wasn't good enough to make the playoffs.
General manager Chris Grier will use the offseason to retool the roster to give new head coach Mike McDaniel all the tools he needs to succeed. Grier will have over $64.6 million in cap space to work with, so there are plenty of options out there.
Here's a look at three free agents that the Dolphins need to sign to make a Super Bowl run in 2023.
Dolphins Free Agent Targets
1. Trent Brown, Right Tackle
The Dolphins had the fourth-worst rushing attack in the NFL last season, which was mainly due to a lackluster offensive line. Finding a pair of starting offensive tackles is one of Miami's goals this offseason and Trenton Brown could fill one of the spots. He was held to just nine games because of a nagging calf injury, however, he's one of the better players at the position when healthy. He'd also provide suitable pass blocking for Tua Tagovailoa, proven by his allowing just one sack on 489 offensive snaps. Spotrac currently lists his market value at $10.5 million, which is great value for what he brings to the table when healthy. If he can avoid injury, the Dolphins' passing and rushing games could improve with Brown on the roster.
2. Chris Godwin, Wide Receiver
According to Spotrac, Pro-Bowl wide receiver Chris Godwin will have a market value of $18.1 million this offseason — more than most teams can afford. Well, except for the Dolphins. Miami's wide receiver room was largely underwhelming last season, aside from Jaylen Waddle. It's clear that the team needs another game-changing wideout and Godwin has proven to be capable of that role. He's hit at least 1,100 receiving yards in two of the last three seasons and has 21 touchdown catches after that stretch. Grier must be aggressive if he wants the Dolphins to be taken seriously, which means targeting high-end free agents.
3. Cordarrelle Patterson, Running Back/Wide Receiver
Cordarrelle Patterson and the Atlanta Falcons have made it clear that they'd love for the veteran to return next season. At the same time, money can be a pretty convincing tool and the Dolphins have a lot of it. Patterson enjoyed the best season of his career in Atlanta, racking up career-highs in both rushing (618) and receiving (548) yards, as well as 11 total touchdowns from scrimmage. In addition to Miami's passing game, the running game also struggled at times throughout 2021. Signing Patterson would essentially kill two birds with one stone, bringing in a proven veteran presence in the process.
