3 Best Remaining Tyrann Mathieu Destinations in 2022 NFL Free Agency

Three-time Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best players left on the market. Though he'll be 30 by the time next season starts, the Honey Badger is still one of the best ballhawks in the business. He's recorded 13 interceptions over the last three seasons and received a solid 76.4 coverage grade from ProFootballFocus in 2021.
Here are the three best remaining free-agent destinations for the two-time First Team All-Pro.
Tyrann Mathieu Free Agency 2022
3. Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles can offer Mathieu a great combination of money and opportunity. He'd be a massive upgrade in coverage over K'Von Wallace, who does his best work in the run game, and Philly has the fourth most remaining cap space in the league at $22.1 million. The Eagles might not be the legit, no-doubt contender Mathieu is hoping to join at this stage in his career. But the NFC is wide open and the Eagles have three first-round picks to work with this offseason. This team has the potential to make a big jump in 2022, and signing Mathieu could help turn that into a reality.
2. San Francisco 49ers
This is entirely dependent on Jimmy Garoppolo's future with the San Francisco 49ers. SF currently has less than $2 million in available cap space, but that number would balloon to about $27.5 million if Jimmy G is traded. That would need to happen pretty soon, as the Honey Badger won't be on the market forever, but you have to think both sides want to get this done sooner rather than later. And if the money is right, Mathieu would be an excellent fit in San Francisco. He'd be the playmaker this secondary needs on the backend, and he and Jimmie Ward would form one of the best safety duos in football. Mathieu could be the final piece of an already-elite defense.
1. Kansas City Chiefs
The Tyreek Hill trade will sting, but it opened up a lot of possibilities for the Kansas City Chiefs. If they're still interested, they should have no trouble retaining Mathieu's services. Kansas City is operating with $22.7 million in cap space – the third-highest mark in the NFL, per Spotrac. A reunion remains very much in the cards, and KC might need one to stay afloat in the NFL's most-competitive division.
