The Oakland Athletics' lows have certainly outweighed the highs throughout the 2022 MLB season, resulting in them sitting dead last in the AL West with a 23-47 record. Barring a miraculous comeback, the A's project to miss the postseason for the second straight year.
It'd be in the Athletics' best interest to operate as sellers ahead of the MLB trade deadline. After all, they have several veteran players on expiring contracts that could net a solid return, helping build toward the future in the process.
The MLB trade deadline is Aug. 2, and these three Athletics are the most likely to be moved.
Athletics Trade Rumors
1. Frankie Montas, SP
The A's proved before Opening Day that they aren't afraid to trade away their best players and Frankie Montas could be the next to go. The 29-year-old Dominican hurler has performed well despite how bad his team has been, amassing a 3.53 ERA and 1.139 WHIP in 14 starts while recording 84 strikeouts over 81.2 innings. Contenders are always looking to use the trade deadline to shore up their rotation and Montas is the type of pitcher that fits the ball. Addin that he's also under team control next season and it'd be a shock if he was still in Oakland after Aug. 2.
2. Jed Lowrie, IF
Another Athletics player that could be on the move is veteran infielder Jed Lowrie. The 38-year-old switch-hitter has had his struggles in 2022, batting .192 while putting up a trio of HRs and 16 RBIs in 44 games. Having said that, it was only a year ago that he went yard 14 times while driving in 69 runners, so a bounce-back on a new team isn't out of the question. A club looking into him likely sees Lowrie as a bench bat, which is something he could excel at with his switch-hitting capabilities. He also won't command a big asking price as a pending free agent, making it easy for Oakland to deal him.
3. Ramon Laureano, CF
Several A's have been involved in trade rumors this year, including centerfielder Ramon Laureano. The former 2014 16th-round pick is a solid option for any team looking to add some speed to its lineup. He's already doubled 10 times in 141 at-bats this year, stealing five bases as well as recording two HRs, eight RBIs and a .241/.323/.355 slash line. Laureano also has an attractive contract situation, being under team control until 2025. He's a decent depth player in the present while giving an inquiring team future options as well.
