Kentucky Derby Superfecta

The superfecta, given its long and potentially profitable odds, is one of the more popular bets made in horse racing. To win a superfecta, you must correctly pick the horses that finish in the top-4 positions, in the right order. To give you an idea of the type of money that can be earned from a superfecta, take a look at what a $1 bet would have netted you at last year's Kentucky Derby.

2018: Justify (5-2)/Good Magic (9-1)/Audible (7-1)/Instilled Regard (85-1)
$1 Payout: $19,618.20

Over the last 10 years, the highest superfecta payout came in 2009, when the 50/1 long shot, Mine That Bird, won the Derby.

2009: Mine That Bird (50-1)/Pioneerof the Nile (6-1)/Musket Man (19-1)/Papa Clem (12-1) $2 Payout: $557,006.40

Betting Kentucky Derby Favorites

In 2012, there was a change in how horses qualified for the Derby, moving to a points system that emphasized the races directly leading up to the Kentucky Derby. Prior to this change, there had been a handful of long shots that ended up dawning the roses, including Giacomo (50-1) in 2005, Mine That Bird (50-1) in 2009, Animal Kingdom (20-1) in 2011, and I’ll Have Another (15-1) in 2012. Since that change was made, six straight favorites have won the Kentucky Derby. Overall, 52 out of 144 favorites have won the Kentucky Derby.
