The best divisional rivalries are ones that are closely fought, like the battles between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox. Chicago may lead with a 1,116-1,111 record in the all-time series, but it was Cleveland that got the last laugh in 2022 by winning 12 of 19 head-to-head showdowns.

Each team enters the offseason with the goal of winning the AL Central in 2023. The Guardians own the lowest 2023 payroll in the league, meaning they have the opportunity to be in the running for any free agent out there. Poaching one player away from the White Sox could prove to be a brutal blow.

Cleveland Guardians Free Agency

White Sox fans certainly want to see Jose Abreu back on the team next year, but reports suggest the free agent slugger is already gathering a ton of interest. The Guardians should be one of the teams interested considering they only smacked 127 home runs during the 2022 season (No. 29 in MLB).

Abreu would be a perfect addition to a Guardians lineup that lacks impactful hitters outside of Jose Ramirez. Ramirez was the only Cleveland player to log over 20 home runs and 80 RBI this past year. Meanwhile, Abreu has tallied at least 25 home runs and 100 RBI in six of his eight full seasons played.

The three-time All-Star also struck out only 16.2% of the time in 2022, which was the best mark of his career. Yes, Abreu is 35 years old and likely past his prime at this point. However, his plate discipline and power stroke fills a huge roster hole for a Cleveland squad that is ready to compete right now.

Bringing in Abreu would upgrade Cleveland's 1B/DH spot alongside Josh Naylor in a ballpark that forces batters to swing big if they want to hit one over the fences. It would pressure the White Sox to replace a player that has served as a leader for years as well. That sounds like a win-win scenario.
