Sean Payton has been talking a lot about his potential return to coaching in the NFL. On Monday night he was the guest of Eli and Payton Manning on ESPN2's "ManningCast." As he was watching and talking with the Manning brothers, Payton dropped a little recruiting pitch to Lamar Jackson. Noting that both of them could someday become free agents at the same time.
Payton clearly has admiration for Lamar, and how could you not, he's one of the most talented and versatile offensive players the NFL has ever seen. An offensive coaching mind like Payton's could really take Jackson's talents to the next level.
Jackson has failed to work out a long-term contract with the Baltimore Ravens, but even if he can't, the Ravens will certainly just franchise tag him. But that can only happen for two years, then he will become an unrestricted free agent.
While Payton certainly seems interested in returning to the sidelines, he also doesn't seem like he's in any rush. He's clearly waiting for the right team an oppportunity to come calling, which is understandable. The moment he opens himself up to offers, he instantly becomes the top choice of all 32 teams list, whether they would like to admit it or not.
Jackson and Payton would create quite the pairing for the right organization if the two were ever able to make it a reality.
