NFL legend Drew Brees' retirement this offseason has created a void at the New Orleans Saints' quarterback position. Both Jameis Winston and Tayson Hill — Brees' backups last season — have been battling it out this offseason to see who'll earn the starting job. Even though an announcement hasn't been made, FanDuel Sportsbook is beginning to favor one of the two options.

Winston is FanDuel Sportsbook's favorite to be the Saints' Week 1 starting QB at -280 odds. Meanwhile, Hill is the underdog at +220 odds with 2021 fourth-round pick Ian Book a distant third at +1600.

Saints Starter Odds

Winston has been getting a lot of praise this offseason for his work both on and off of the field. Most recently, Saints All-Pro wideout Michael Thomas has said that he's noticed Winston "getting better" as the offseason progresses. A compliment like that should pump up Saints fans, especially if they're hoping to see some immediate chemistry between the two players.

One thing to note is that Winston has not started an NFL game since the 2019 season as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During that season, he threw for 5,109 passing yards and 33 touchdowns but became the first quarterback since 1988 to throw at least 30 interceptions. Fortunately for Winston, Sean Payton is one of the best coaches in the league and if anyone can help turn his career around, it's him.

On the other hand, while the odds may not favor him, Hill has the benefit of him actually starting games last season. The 30-year-old QB started four games under center in Brees' absence last season, finishing with 928 passing yards and 4 touchdowns to 2 interceptions. While Hill had a 3-1-0 record, those aren't starting-QB-worthy stats, especially when you take into account that he had 10 fumbles and was sacked 14 times alone in 2021. If Winston winds up winning the starting job, look for Hill to resume his role as a gadget player for New Orleans, excelling in the pass-catching and rushing aspects of his game.

Whichever player wins the job will be thrown into the fire in a home game against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 to open up the 2021 NFL season. The Saints are currently favored to win that game at -132 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, though Aaron Rodgers' current trade drama may be playing a big role in making New Orleans the favorite.
