The St. Louis Cardinals have had a relatively quiet offseason outside of their crucial Willson Contreras addition in December. But that doesn't mean the franchise is done making improvements to a roster that won 93 games last year and has made the playoffs in four consecutive seasons.

The latest MLB offseason rumors link St. Louis to a potential trade for a buzzy pitching target.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes the Cardinals' impending group of four starting pitchers headed for free agency (Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty) makes this a position the franchise must prioritize. Enter Pablo Lopez of the Miami Marlins.

Lopez has been linked to a number of trade rumors dating back to last season's trade deadline and his two years remaining in arbitration makes him an intriguing candidate. Not to mention his talent on the mound. Lopez owns a career 3.94 ERA and has pitched to a 3.52 ERA mark across 63 starts in the last three years.

Rosenthal reports that the Cardinals and Marlins have "engaged in at least preliminary trade discussions" to this point, and St. Louis' potential surplus of outfield talent with top prospect Jordan Walker on the rise makes this a viable decision for Miami. He mentions Lars Nootbaar as an option that would "satisfy the Marlins’ need for offense" while making more room for Walker in 2023.
