New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore sparked trade rumors on Monday as he was absent from the team's mandatory minicamp. Considering how the 30-year-old is set to become a free agent after this season, it's not surprising to see people assume that his days in New England could be coming to an end.
Whenever trade rumors surround a notable player, it's not surprising to see others trying to recruit them to their team. After all, it worked for Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans fairly recently. That's exactly what Los Angeles Rams CB Jalen Ramsey did on Monday as he tried to lure Gilmore to the his squad.
Stephon Gilmore Trade Rumors
Gilmore posted a story onto his Instagram page on Monday, tagging Gilmore's account and asking him, "what's good!?" The Rams cornerback then took it one step further, saying that MLB superstar Mookie Betts also made a move from Boston to Los Angeles not too long ago and it resulted in him winning a World Series title. All things considered, Rams fans would be pretty happy if history repeated itself, this time in football.
A four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro member, Gilmore has been a defensive force since arriving in New England back in 2017. His best season with the Patriots was in 2019 when he was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year after recording 53 total tackles, 20 passes defended and 6 interceptions (two of which were returned for touchdowns).
Unfortunately, Gilmore had a rough go in 2020 when it came to injury troubles. A battle with COVID-19 and a partially torn quad later in the season held him to just 11 games played. Still, a player of his caliber and talents shouldn't have too much of an issue bouncing back.
The Rams are currently tied for the 5th-best odds to win Super Bowl 56, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Adding a Gilmore-quality player would go a long way in ensuring that they're championship contenders in 2021, so you can't blame Ramsey for trying.
