With NFL free agency rapidly approaching, teams are cutting down their rosters to free up cap space. That has added some very interesting players to this year's loaded pool of available free agents.
Pro Football Focus has projected one of this year's top available free agents to sign with the Arizona Cardinals — former Tennessee Titans' tight end Jonnu Smith.
Jonnu Smith Cardinals
Smith would be a dynamic addition to this offense. The Cardinals are already pretty much set at wide receiver with DeAndre Hopkins, Christian Kirk and (hopefully) Larry Fitzgerald. But the team could stand to upgrade at tight end, especially with Dan Arnold hitting the open market this offseason. Even if Arnold does return, though, Smith would still be a huge get.
Smith is one of the most athletic tight ends in the league. He's a size-speed freak as a 6-foot-3, 250-pound TE who is in the 94th percentile for burst and 84th for speed, per Player Profiler. That allows him to be dominant after the catch.
In fact, Smith racked up an average of 5.8 yards after the catch per reception in 2020, which had him tied for the fifth-best mark at the position. That came on the heels of a 2019 season that saw him post the second-best mark among tight ends in that regard, averaging 7.8 yards of YAC per reception.
With all the quick throws and screens Arizona likes to use, it's not hard to imagine Smith dominating in Kliff Kingsbury's offense. He'd be a perfect fit for the TE-needy Cardinals.
