The Phillies and Jose Alvarado have avoided arbitration by coming to terms on a one-year deal for the 2023 campaign, which will be Alvarado's last before free agency. That typically entails a sizable pay bump for most players, especially when they're coming off a productive season like Alvarado is.
The lefty was a key cog in Philadelphia's bullpen last year, helping the team make the World Series with his reliable work in the late innings. Appearing primarily in the seventh or eighth inning, the 27-year-old helped stabilize the Phillies' bullpen with his best season in years, going 4-2 with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.92 WHIP in 51 innings.
Alvarado pitched well in the playoffs up until the World Series, when the Houston Astros tagged him for 4 runs in 3 1/3 innings of work as Philadelphia fell in six games. He'll try to help the Phillies get over the hump this year, as they currently have the seventh-best World Series odds on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.
