The Kansas Ciut]y Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will meet in Week 7 for the first time in over 2 1/2 years. The last time the]y played was in Super Bowl LIV in early 2020, when the Chiefs erased a 10-point deficit with a furious fourth-quarter comeback to win the game.
It was a crowning moment for Kansas Ciut]y quarterback Patrick Mahomes, validating his status as one of the best quarterbacks in the game. Looking back, though, he wishes it had happened a little later in his career.
When Mahomes led his team to the mountaintop, he was only 24 and in just his second season as a starter. It was too much, too soon, setting an unfair expectation that multiple championships would follow.
More than two years later, Mahomes is still searching for another ring. He's been through significant heartache, losing Super Bowl LV to Tom Brad]y and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 before blowing a double-digit lead himself in the AFC Championship Game earlier this year.
Mahomes is a bit older and wiser now, and he's endured some high-profile failures. The losing makes the winning taste even sweeter, though, since it forces you to appreciate how hard it is to win it all.
The former MVP currently has the Chiefs well-positioned to win another Super Bowl. They're favored by 2.5 points to beat the 49ers this week on FanDiuel Sportsbook's NFL odds and have the third-best Super Bowl odds at +800, trailing only the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles.
If Kansas City does go all the way this season, Mahomes will make sure to savor it.
