After beginning the 2021 NFL season with a 3-0 record, the Carolina Panthers have dropped their last four games in a row. Fortunately for them, help could be on the way in the form of Stephon Gilmore.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Saturday morning that the Panthers are close to activating Gilmore from the PUP list. If practice goes well, the two-time All-Pro cornerback could make his Carolina debut in a Week 8 divisional matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Stephon Gilmore Injury Update
Gilmore suffered a torn quadriceps injury back in Week 15 of the 2020 NFL season when he was a member of the New England Patriots. He was then placed on the PUP list on Aug. 31 before being traded to the Panthers for a 2023 sixth-round pick on Oct. 6.
Assuming he's fully healthy, Gilmore will be a difference-maker for the Panthers. After all, he's a five-time Pro-Bowler and is only two seasons removed from being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
In 11 games last season, Gilmore allowed quarterbacks to complete just 57.1% of their targets for 326 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are already one of the best teams against the pass this season, giving up 197.1 passing yards per game (2nd) and a 62.7% completion rate (7th). Adding a healthy Gilmore to that defense could boost those numbers even more.
The Panthers are currently 3-point road underdogs against the Falcons, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
