There was rampant speculation this past offseason that guard Jalen Brunson would sign with the New York Knicks in free agency. That expectation became a reality this summer, but the speed in which an official deal was agreed to resulted in the NBA launching an investigation into potential tampering violations.
Now the league has announced an official punishment for New York.
The Knicks were found in violation of the NBA's rules around early free agency discussions. As a result, New York has been docked its own second-round pick in 2025.
This punishment is in line with similar cases. The Philadelphia 76ers were also found guilty of tampering this offseason involving free-agent signings P.J. Tucker and Danuel House. Philly was stripped of its second-rounders in 2023 and 2024 following an NBA investigation.
It's safe to say the Knicks won't mind losing a fairly meaningless draft pick considering how well Brunson has panned out. He's averaging career highs in points per game (20.8) and assists (6.2), providing New York exactly the star presence at guard the team needed.
