The Cleveland Browns have been busy this week. The organization signed Jadeveon Clowney on Wednesday, and in what appears to be a corresponding move to clear up some cap space, the Browns have released former Pro Bowl DT Sheldon Richardson.
Still a productive player, the 30-year-old should draw plenty of interest on the open market. With that in mind, here are the three most likely destinations for Richardson in free agency.
Sheldon Richardson Release
3. New York Giants
Richardson began his career with the New York Jets, making his lone Pro Bowl appearance for the team back in 2014. He could be heading back to New York this offseason, but this time to the Giants. Big Blue could use another interior rusher to pair with Leonard Williams (another former Jet), and there aren't many better options than Richardson at this point of the offseason.
2. Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins have a pretty clear hole on the interior of their defensive line. Christian Wilkins showed promise in his first two seasons, but he's not the disruptor that Richardson is quite yet. Richardson could be a nice fit in the middle of Brian Flores' defense, and Miami has enough money to make this work, provided he takes a bit of a discount.
1. Buffalo Bills
Keeping things with the AFC East, Richardson could be the piece that takes this Buffalo Bills' defense over the top. Buffalo's pass-rushing unit generated a middling 38 sacks last season, which was tied for the 15th-best mark in the NFL. Richardson's 4.5 sacks last year would've been tied for the second-best mark on the team in 2020. He and Ed Oliver could be a powerful one-two punch at DT for the team next season, giving Buffalo a fighting chance against the likes of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
