The 2022 MLB season has crossed the midway mark and it's starting to become clear which teams are contenders and which teams are pretenders. The New York Mets have yet to relinquish their spot atop the National League East with a 58-35 record and their fans will love ESPN's first-half grades.

David Schoenfield gave the Mets an A-, which trails only the Los Angeles Dodgers (A) in the NL. It's important to note that the Atlanta Braves (56-37 record) also received an A-, suggesting that this is going to be a close race down the stretch. A division title means much more than a Wild Card spot.

The Mets have gotten contributions from up and down the roster all season long. Pitcher David Peterson has stepped up as a reliable starter with a 3.24 ERA across 13 starts. Meanwhile, outfielder Brandon Nimmo is on pace to set career-high marks at the plate. He has scored a team-high 59 runs.

The signing of ace Max Scherzer has made all the difference, though. The two-time Cy Young Award is 6-1 on the year with a 2.22 ERA in 11 starts (69.0 innings). Scherzer headlines a rotation that boasts the eighth-best ERA in baseball (3.71) and is set to get star Jacob deGrom back soon.

Despite averaging 4.70 runs at the plate (No. 5 in MLB), the Mets would still benefit from adding a bat or two at the trade deadline. Keep an eye on their front office. For now, manager Buck Showalter's team has the fourth-best odds to win to the World Series at +700, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
