Injuries have played a big part in the Detroit Tigers' early struggles this season. Starting pitcher Matt Manning is one of several players on the IL, but he's progressed enough to take part in a minor league rehab assignment, putting him on the verge of returning.

Manning won't be called up until he gets in enough reps to prove he's healthy, though. And a major blunder by the Tigers caused him to see his recent start cut way short.

Matt Manning News

Manager A.J. Hinch revealed Manning was pulled in just the second inning of his start on Tuesday due to his pitch count. The organization doesn't allow any minor-league pitcher to surpass 30 pitches in an inning, and Manning hit that mark before getting all three outs, so he was pulled prematurely.

Hinch was under the impression Manning wouldn't be subject to this rule, but obviously that wasn't the case. You'd hope the organization was on the same page with the rehab of a key player, especially given the current injuries to the rotation.

It's disappointing to see how an avoidable miscommunication error will have ramifications on the big-league club. Detroit is now weighing if it should call Manning up following his second short start, since he left his previous appearance early as well.

The Tigers mishandling this situation speaks to the clear issues running throughout the organization right now. Hopefully Manning's potential return from IL helps turn their struggles around quickly.
