Lions Releasing Veteran Defender Ahead of Free Agency

On the heels of the franchise's best season in years, the Detroit Lions are gearing up for NFL free agency and the new league year to open on March 15. As part of that process, the Lions are looking to create additional room with their cap space.
As of Feb. 24, the Lions have approximately $16 million available in cap room. The team made a move on Friday to add $10 million in additional space with the release of a veteran defender.

Detroit Lions News
Detroit announced the release of veteran defensive tackle Michael Brockers on Friday. Brockers spent just two seasons with the franchise and was a major disappointment. Previously averaging 3.1 sacks per year, Brockers racked up just 1.0 sacks in 22 games with the Lions. He also recorded only 56 tackles.
With the move, Detroit increases its cap space to $26 million.
After 11 NFL seasons and heading into his age-33 season, Brockers will contemplate his next move, should it be another cheap veteran deal or possible retirement.
