A 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres wasn't the only thing that Seattle Mariners fans were celebrating on Wednesday night. First-year outfielder Julio Rodriguez was busy making history again, becoming the third rookie in MLB history to record a 25-home run, 25-steal season.

Rodriguez achieved the feat during the bottom of the fifth of Wednesday's matchup. After Padres starter Mike Clevinger threw an off-speed pitch into the dirt, the speedy 21-year-old used it as the perfect opportunity to steal his 25th base.

Julio Rodriguez Rookie Season

What made the moment even cooler was that Mariners fans gave Rodriguez a standing ovation after his successful steal. Historical moments like this rarely come around, so there's no doubt that the player and fanbase will remember this for years to come.

Former MLB All-Star Chris Young was the first player to accomplish the achievement when he hit 32 HRs and stole 27 bases in the 2007 campaign. Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout was then the second to do so with his 30 round-trippers and MLB-best 49 stolen bases in 2012.

Rodriguez has won fans over with his exciting brand of baseball in 2022. In addition to his 25 SBs, the Dominican slugger also has 26 HRs, 72 RBIs and a .279/.342/.499 slash line in 125 games. His team-high 5.5 WAR further highlights his importance to Seattle's success this season.

Needless to say, the Mariners hope that Rodriguez's career ends up more like Trout than Young, whose only achievement was one All-Star appearance. Assuming that Rodriguez can grow into a perennial MVP candidate, Seattle should be a competitive baseball destination for years to come.

Julio Rodriguez AL Rookie of the Year

Much like he's been throughout the season, Rodriguez remains as FanDuel Sportsbook's AL Rookie of the Year favorite at -3000 odds. For reference, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman has the next best odds at a distant +1100.
