Carolina Hurricanes vs Tampa Bay Lightning News, Analysis, and Picks
It obviously wasn't the outcome the Carolina Hurricanes wanted in Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Still, the Canes can at least be satisfied with the effort put forward in their series-opening defeat.
Sunday night's game was the sixth time in seven postseason outings that the Hurricanes outplayed their opponents across all strengths. Carolina has been so dominant that Game 1 was the first time this postseason that they were held to single-digit high-danger attempts. Granted, the Canes have played four overtime games, but they remain an offensively dominant team. We should expect increased production as the Canes find their offensive rhythm in Game 2.
Our concerns with the Lightning were premised on their PDO being inflated at the start of round two. They did nothing to alleviate those concerns in Game 1, putting up a combined shooting and save percentage of 1.040, bringing their postseason average up to 1.052. That was the sixth time in seven postseason games that the Lightning posted an above-average PDO, indicating that they are due for regression. That's further supported by the Bolts' advanced metrics, which continue to suffer.
Tampa has been objectively outplayed in six of seven but has found a way to win five of those games. The Lightning's defensive metrics have improved over their last two games, as they have allowed nine high-danger chances in each game, but they have been out-possessed and out-shot in six straight games. Tampa can't continue to be outplayed and win games, leaving them on a crash course for correction.
These teams remain firmly planted on the opposite ends of the expected goals-for spectrum. The Canes were the better team in Game 1 but didn't get the victory. We're betting that Carolina comes out on top in Game 2 and avoids going down 2-0 before the series shifts back to Tampa Bay.
