NFL training camp is right around the corner, which means veterans and rookies alike are going to be battling it out for the last few roster spots available. That includes players on the New York Giants, as team insider Jordan Raanan recently revealed one veteran in danger of being cut before Week 1.

New York Giants News

Raanan pointed out that wide receiver Darius Slayton's roster spot is far from guaranteed at this point. The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his rookie contract and the Giants could save over $2.5 million by cutting him loose. That has to be enticing given Slayton is the team's No. 4 WR at best.

Slayton is coming off a forgettable season in which he posted a 15.8% drop percentage on catchable passes. That was the second-highest mark among receivers with at least 25 targets. Overall, the Auburn product logged 339 yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 receptions in 13 games played in 2021.

The Giants have a new coaching staff leading the way and it's telling that Slayton worked primarily with the second team in the spring. That was the case even with some of the New York's top WRs out with injuries. The upside of rookie Wan'Dale Robinson doesn't help Slayton's chances, either.

All things considered, Slayton has the rest of the summer to prove he has improved on his drops and still has the speed to be a reliable deep threat. The Giants have odds set at +600 to win the NFC East division and odds set at +8000 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
